Wipe to Win

Frequently asked questions

Not what you expected?

Most of the time, the surprise comes from what the log contains, or doesn't. Here are the questions I get asked the most.

The logs

Are my logs sent anywhere?

Your log file, no: your browser reads it straight from your disk. The result of each run's analysis, however, goes to the Wipe to Win server (place, outcome, character names, how the fight went); you can turn that off in Storage. Spell IDs go to Wowhead, to display the icons. It's all in the privacy policy.

Chrome refuses to open the folder, or talks about “uploading”.

Drag the folder onto the page instead: that way Chrome doesn't ask anything. With the button, it talks about “uploaded” files, when they're simply read on the spot.

No run shows up after the scan.

Check that the SimpleCombatLogger addon was installed during the run and that you chose the Logs folder, not _retail_. The guide covers everything.

How is it different from Warcraft Logs?

Warcraft Logs uploads your log to its servers, to rank and compare players. Wipe to Win reads it in your browser, without sending it, and looks for something else: why a player died, which spell went through while a kick was ready, which defensive stayed on the bar. The two go well together.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes: everything happens in the browser, whatever the system. On a Mac, the folder is in /Applications/World of Warcraft/_retail_/Logs. A recent browser is all you need.

My logs weigh several gigabytes.

No problem. Each file is only read once (count about a second per 100 MB), then only the keys found are kept. You can archive or delete your old logs afterwards, keys already read stay available.

Do I need an account?

No, no account and no sign-up.

The analysis

There are no health curves.

Advanced combat logging wasn't turned on. Without it, the log doesn't give HP on every hit. You turn it on once and for all in the game's Network options.

A player shows up as “Unknown”.

Their specialization isn't known to Wipe to Win yet, often because it just arrived with a patch. Click “Unknown” to pick it by hand: role, icon and judgment follow.

My defensive is never held against me.

The log shows neither your talents nor your bags. Until you've used a defensive or a potion at least once in the run, nothing proves you had it, so nothing is held against you.

How does it know a spell could be interrupted?

The log doesn't say. A spell counts as interruptible if it was interrupted at least once in one of your logs. The more you analyze, the more complete the list gets.

The report blames me for a kick I couldn't make.

The log knows neither line of sight nor what was on your screen. A player more than 48 yards from the caster is never blamed, but one behind a pillar is. The replay shows where everyone stood: if it proves you right, ignore the remark.

Does it work in raids?

Yes. Every boss pull has its own line in the list, and several attempts can be read as a single fight. Deaths, kicks and defensives are judged as in a key. See the Raid page.

My numbers differ from another tool's.

DPS is measured against combat time, not the total length of the run. Pets count for their owner, shields for what they absorbed. Every tool makes its own choices; these are described in the report.

Why nothing about my rotation?

Wipe to Win judges what the log proves: deaths, interrupts, cooldowns, consumables, ground effects. A rotation depends on talents and choices the log doesn't show. A player's card still gives their full cycle, and it's up to you to judge.

Your data

How do I erase everything?

A button on the Privacy page erases the analyses and preferences kept by your browser. Your log files aren't touched.

I found an error in the analysis.

Write to us through the contact form with the dungeon, the date and what looks wrong to you. You can also share the run from the analyzer and paste the link in your message.
